Raymond E. Sumrell (1924-2004)

Mr. Sumrell was born in New Bern, North Carolina, Mr. Sumrell was admitted to the North Carolina and United States District Court bars in 1949. He attended Wake Forest University prior to entering the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his undergraduate and law degrees in 1949. Prior to pursuing his graduate and post-graduate education, he served in World War II as a lieutenant with the 8th Air Force, stationed in England from 1942 through 1945. While serving in the United States Army Air Force he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters for combat missions over Germany. Mr. Sumrell also served as a judge of the Craven County Recorder's Court from 1954-1962.

Ray Sumrell retired from the active practice of law prior to his death in 2004. His portrait hangs in the office of the firm as a founder of the firm and respected member of his profession.
